My name is Tina Gilson and I'm from San Antonio, TX (Hi to Kathy Parkes).
I've been a lurker here for 2 years and learning so much with every post I
read. Guess I've been very intimidated about posting since I'm just a
layperson. Thought it was about time I introduced myself. I'm a mom of 2
bf boys (ages 21 mos and almost 4 yrs). I've had dreams of becoming an LC
but working full-time in a non-medical field doesn't leave me with much
time for contact hours. I've taken Phase I of the Tx Dept of Health BF'ing
course and will take Phase II in the summer. I've also started the
BreastEd modules. Recently I started writing and distributing an 8-page
breastfeeding newsletter in the San Antonio area and am working on the
second edition for Jan/Feb. At this time I can afford to print about 400
copies and am distributing them through day care centers, doulas, private
LC's, and anyone who looks really pregnant (foot in mouth big time because
I recently made the mistake of giving one to a mom with a 4 month old when
I really thought she was pregnant. She asked me how I knew she had a
nursing baby. You'd think I would know by now never to assume anything.)

Anyway, I know everyone likes funny bf'ing stories and could appreciate
this. Last night after work I stopped for a take-out order at a local
restaurant. It was a busy night and the staff told me to wait at the bar
for my order. The 4 yo sat in a barstool and I put the 21 mo on the bar in
front of me. Next to me were 3 good 'ol boys about middle age who were
joking about the baby on the bar. I made the comment that you know you're
not old enough to drink if your mama has to lift you up to the bar. I
followed it by saying "he's still drinking at the chi chi bar anyway."
(Chi Chi is sort of a Tex Mex slang for nursing, like "she's a chi chi
baby") I heard one guy say real low "did you get what she said?" They sort
of looked at each other and one asked how long I'd be doing that, so I said
as long as he wanted to, and I got to tell them he was also the healthiest
baby at day care because he was still nursing. This of course led to a few
cracks about remembering that the next time they felt sick, but one of the
guys said he'd heard about how healthy nursing babies were. So I hope they
got a little education out of the whole thing. They certainly didn't
expect to have a talk about chi chi with their beer.

Thank's for everyone's indulgence.
