Hello Marijke,

Russians are notorious for self-diagnosis and self-treatment. If you do a
search on disbacteriosis, you can find out the reason for looking for
probiotics. The drug you mentioned is called Bactisubtil. It is used for
treatment of (yes) disbactriosis, the most popular diagnosis in Russian
babies, as well as acute or chronic diarrhea in children. Very few doctors
have education and experience in working with exclusively breastfed
children, so normal bf-infant stools are mistaken for diarrhea. There are
several ways of "normalizing" bf-baby stools -- probiotics or|and formula.
Doctors aim is stool that of an adult. While supportive flora may
beneficial for formula-fed children (most of Russian children are) and is
beneficial for infants after antibiotic treatment (antibiotics are overused
in Russia), there is absolutely no reason to look for probiotics in case of
a healthy breastfed baby.

Hope this helps and clears the issue,

Natalie Wilson
