Just a quick note, which doesn't speak to the range of your concerns, to
say that I don't think there is anything particularly strange in this
request. As an editor, I know how hard it is to find good photos, and
the discussion of the quality of the resolution triggered a "been there,
done that" reaction in me. You could certainly do a google search on the
author, but Lancet is legitimate, so I don't know about asking for
credentials. On the other hand, asking what kind of an article it is (in
a polite and professional manner) makes sense.
