I cant find anything on molds in mattresses...however if you type 'SIDS
molds' in google you will get lots of hits, some talking about the link with
sids and molds in damp watery environments

"The programme focused on three main risk factors: prone sleeping, smoking
and not breastfeeding (Mitchell, Aley et al 1992). In 1992 bed sharing was
labelled a risk factor (Mitchell, Taylor et al 1992), but it was later
recognised as significant only in association with maternal cigarette
smoking (Scragg et al 1993). Following the 1991 campaign the national SIDS
rates halved, but anecdotally, SIDS deaths in Maori communities did not
appear to fall"

Rachel asks:
"I have been told that there is in New Zealand a belief that babies should
not bed-share due to mold in the parents' mattresses which causes toxins
that cause SIDS. My informant tells me that, moreover, it is not thought
that maternal smoking, ambient temperature nor breastfeeding influence the
risk of SIDS. Please if there is anyone on the list who is familiar with
the current state of the discussion about SIDS in NZ, could you briefly
enlighten me about it?"
