At a baby shower, I heard this discussion about pain relief in
childbirth: Some moms were saying how "you must get the epidural" and
the pregnant guest of honor commented that she was not against pain
relief because she "didn't like to be out of control."
I have found that I make a good amount of noise during childbirth but I
never felt that it made me "out of control," in fact it was a choice I
made because making noise made me feel so much better. It's funny that
my friend should say she didn't want to be out of control, when in being
a quiet, calm birthing woman she would actually be letting herself be
controlled by how she thought others wanted her to act during labor.
