Dear Friends:
Here is the next installment in the new series "LC, Insurance Nurse."
Today's mother had bf her first child, but leaked all the time and hated
that part of it. This new baby latched on poorly, mother got overful, and
started giving bottles of commerical product. No breastfeeding in past 24 hours.
I visited her tonight, rather than wait any more time for her not to
breastfeed. She wasn't sure about breastfeeding any more, upset that it hurt and
fearing months of leaking again. I talked to her and her husband about the
scary things about formula; I encouraged them to check for themselves on the web.
I presented a picture of comfortable, non-leaking breastfeeding with all the
convenience.
She went for it. Hand-expressed; got 2 ounces from each side with barely
any effort! And sweet baby girl, bless her little soul, latched on beautifully
on both sides! Lots of gulping. Contentment; totally comfortable for mom.
I am finding that moms can correct their latch in these early days by one
or both of two things. Pull baby's butt in close so baby's head can tip back.
And lift the weight of the breast away from baby's mouth.
    Wheee!!
I will continue to follow her for possible oversupply, but for now,
things are copacetic!
    warmly,
