I like to share with new moms an analogy that I believe I learned here on
lactnet years ago regarding effort of breastfeeding. I tell them that
bottlefeeding and breastfeeding are like learning to ride a tricycle and a
bicycle. Bottlefeeding is like the tricycle - easier to learn in the very
beginning, but it's a lot harder to get downtown on a tricycle.
Breastfeeding is more like the bicycle - you wobble and fall off and may
even skin your knee, but soon it just "clicks" and then it's so much faster
and easier to get downtown on that bicycle. I don't know who is the
original author of this analogy, so if someone on this list recognizes it as
theirs, please take the credit! Parents, at least, seem to understand that
they need to be patient while both mom and baby are learning. This doesn't
address the HCP's perception that breastfed babies are more work for them,
though! (By the way, in this analogy, I liken myself to someone running
alongside the bicycle while the new learner is getting the hang of it, and
if we need to use any equipment, that becomes the "training wheels" that are
taken off as soon as possible.)
