> Pamela Mazzella Di Bosco asked for quotes on why breastfeeding matters,
for a brochure.
Hi Pamela,
You may like to use the quote below, from the last edition (1991) of my
Australian book , Succesful Breastfeeding, now out of print. This would
have been in earlier editions, too. You are welcome to use it, with
acknowledgement. "Phillips" was my previous surname.
Virginia
Quotation:
"Many people do not realise that, despite its high protein and mineral
load, cow's milk is not a complete food for calves, the baby for which it is
the natural food. Cattle are grazing animals, and calves supplement their
(cow's) milk intake by eating grass soon after birth, usually by about three
weeks of age. Human milk, on the other hand, provides for the very
different needs of human babies for the first half of the first year,
without supplementation." [NB. "without" is in italic print]
[From: Phillips, Virginia. Successful Breastfeeding. Melbourne: Nursing
Mothers' Association of Australia, 6th NMAA edition, 1991, p. 2. This was
the last of 7 editions, the first - in 1974 - having had a different
publisher .]
