Dear Friends:
Interesting topic here about "lack of breastfeeding" versus "formula"
causing illness.
If the formula is made wrong, or is contaminated, it causes illness and
death fairly quickly, as we have seen in the Israeli tragedy.
Exclusive formula feeding is enough to cause illness in the future. Maybe
we are really talking about some time interval here in order to talk about
causation?
Ball and Wright, in their great paper, talk about the costs of not
breastfeeding and calculated that a baby never breastfed cost the HMO around
$350-450 per year in just 3 illnesses.
Maybe this is the road to take for political reasons. We are not
attacking formula per se; there is a need for formula in the USA right now. We are
upset when so many do not breastfeed, lack of breastfeeding is a serious health
concern.
    Thanks for a great discussion.
    warmly,
