I also need to know what others use as their standard for hypoglycemia in
term infants, not LGA, not babies of diabetic Moms. They are supplementing quite
a bit for blood sugars under 50. This led one of my Moms last week to worry
a lot about her baby, and to beleive she still needed to supplement on the
third day. It took some major convincing on my part to get her to understand she
did not need to continue supplementing at home. I suspect she may actually be
giving some formula "just in case" to her now ten day old baby.
Dear Friends:
The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (www.bfmed.org) has a lovely
protocol for hypoglycemia. And the World Health Organization has published another
review of this topic.
Basically, no one knows what 'normal' blood glucose is for a newborn.
There are lots of studies that look at the first 24 hours, or first 3 days.
However, let's remember that low blood sugar makes us want to eat and not treat
babies for hunger like it was a disease.
