Pam states that it is virtually impossible to get a therapist to see you
without a doctor's referral. Perhaps it depends where you live. There is a PT in
St. Louis, Missouri USA, whom I refer to for babies who need craniosacral
therapy. She has no problem with taking self-referrals--has already worked with
a number of my clients. If we can get the doc to write a referral, then
insurance may cover her fees, but if not, the patient has to pay (which is what has
happened with all my referrals). So, Anne, maybe you want to make some phone
calls to various OTs, PTs, and others who might be able to help the moms you
will be working with, to see if they accept self-referrals. That way, you
won't have sent mom on a "wild goose chase" when you make a referral, and the
PT/OT/etc. will have a heads-up that there are breastfeeding issues involved here
when the mom says you referred her.
