Crystal, I hope you will feel peace along with the sadness soon. I can't imagine what you might have missed during a lactation consult, though. PE of any size usually present as an extreme, acute situation. Smaller PE tend to be associated with cardio-respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath with any level of activity. Abdominal surgery, such as cesarean birth (along with the vascular changes in the pelvis with pregnancy) put this mother at somewhat greater risk. Don't know if returning to work so quickly after major surgery contributed another factor.

I hope someone got some photos of mom and baby that will have special meaning to this little one and sibs in the future. What an awful and difficult situation. How lucky this dyad was, though, to have a network there for them before the unforseeable occurred. My prayer is that Dad and family haven networks, too, for the tough time ahead.
