"Oh, no, Winnie. You got it wrong. That's not punishment. That's
training. The parents do it with great patience and
absolutely no anger. Baby learns to respect the parents and is
ultimately happier for it. (Choke!)"

Ok, I get it. When a policewoman stands on a street corner dressed
like a whore to catch men who frequent prostitutes, she is only
aiming to "train" the men to behave themselves. What a concept.
Personally, I think these programs that try to hide behind the skirt
of a "religious" approach are only manifestations of the "me first"
generation that says babies have to conform to the parents'
lifestyle and not interfere in any way with what the parents want.
It's no wonder some people turn against religion entirely when they
see things like this. (Better not go any further with that thought
or we will definitely get off topic!)

I see a similar attitude disquising itself as being "family
centered". I sometimes see the attitude that FC means "do whatever
the parents want". If you try to point out where the parents'
wishes may not be best for the baby, you get accused of not being
supportive of FC. Isn't the baby part of the family too???? Yes,
parents should be able to make their own decisions, but we must
speak for the baby (who else will?) and make sure parents are
deciding based on complete information and taking the needs of ALL
family menbers into consideration in making their decisions.

Winnie
