Thanks again to all of you who've offered support and comments about our
situation with our OB physicians and patient handouts. Elise, I hope you
don't think I was offended by your post. It was extremely helpful. I'm
learning that I can get caught up in an emotional whirlwind and I feel
fortunate to be the beneficiary of advice and suggestions from people who
understand where I'm coming from! Your advice about timing really got me
thinking. If I've learned anything from this situation, it's that I have
soooo much to learn! Now that I've had a chance to calm down and regroup,
I've started a discussion with my supervisor about how we are delivering
these messages. I would love it if we could keep all of our moms from
getting to the point where they are asking for supplements and pacifiers in
the first place, but we're definately not there yet. In the meantime, I
wonder if it's really in their best interest to be waiting to give them
this information until they're "at the breaking point". When I put myself
in the patient's position, I don't think I would be very receptive to it.

As an aside, the vibes I'm getting from our physicians is that they too
have had a chance to calm down and the odds of us being able to come up
with something everyone can live with are improving significantly. While
I've learned to use lactnet to keep me "fired up", I'm also learning that I
can count on you to give me the wisdom and humor to calm myself down when I
most need to. So.... Thanks and please accept my apologies if I seemed
defensive!

Winnie, I am posting this for everyone in the hopes that it will find its
way to you. We have been so busy on our unit this week that we have had to
board our NICU moms on a unit at the other end of the hospital. Thursday
morning I went over to check on the ones who are pumping. I met a nurse
extern who was working with the RN caring for those patients. She listened
enthusiastically while the RN and I talked about how the moms were doing
and how pumping was going for them. She then shared with me that her goal
is to eventually become an IBCLC. She told me that she just finished her
OB rotation at your hospital and that you were a huge factor in inspiring
her to work toward becoming an IBCLC. Please know that you are very
respected in our community and that you are inspiring others with the work
you do. I wish you the best always and if there's anything I personally
can do for you, you know how to find me.

Barb Fibich, RN, IBCLC
