Heather: I thought I was the only one noticing what I think is a
relatively recent phenomenon - women who can't see the beauty of the baby
and a breast for the forest of gadgets. One thing we need to remember (and
I'm constatnly telling staff this) is that our function as an LC is to
educate. What the mother chooses to do with that information and education
is her choice. We cannot save the world. So, if you've educated her on the
appropriateness of a breast pump or a nipple shield or a whatever and her
response is: "I don't care what you've just told me, I will use (or buy)
one anyway" then you give her one and offer follow-up. Remember, she is an
adult and is responsible for her own decisions and behavior, and
responsible for making decisions for her baby. Of course, I find myself
biting my tongue on a daily basis to not say: "I told you so!" when she
calls me back with problems that have been created by her decisions.
