Dear Friends:
This corruption of the DHHS ad campaign is just like the tobacco
companies hiding the risks of tobacco for decades. In view of the worldwide diabetes
epidemic, repressing information about the hazards of artificial feeding is
criminal.
I have sent a copy of a letter I am sending today to Secretary Thompson
to every colleague that I have: all the local nursing mothers' support groups
and my local ILCA affiliate. I beseech all of you in the States to do the same.
Yes, some formula is necessary for some situations. No one denies that.
However, mass marketing of formula to all is having a negative impact on the
health of the nation. (And the world; that is the reason for the WHO Code.) Stop
experimentation on our babies! Give parents and the public all the
information so that they can make a truly informed choice.
Seatbelts do not guarantee survival in a car crash; breastfeeding does
not guarantee total health for life. However, both seatbelts and breastfeeding
shift the odds so much in favor of a good life that it is worth it to use them!
I feel embarassed and furious about this industry manipulation of
education for profit. Health is not part of this equation when industry can buy its
way into health care policy. Shame on the officials in the AAP who put infant
health below any other consideration!
    warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CIMI, CCE, craniosacral therapy
