I was browsing the link Kate sent out and reading the handout _How Lifestyle
Affects Breast Milk_
http://www.4woman.gov/Breastfeeding/print-bf.cfm?page=235. Under Alcohol
was this statement "If you know that you are going to have alcohol, such as
some wine with dinner, you can pump your milk beforehand to give to your
baby after you have had the alcohol. Then pump and discard the milk that is
most affected by the drink(s)."

I have read in the archives the lively debate regarding whether
breastfeeding ought to be avoided after any level of alcohol consumption.
However, it is my understanding that pumping and dumping isn't necessary
unless needed to maintain milk supply or for mother's comfort. I could not
find any references for the HHS statement (or for the handout in general)
nor did any of the listed 'additional Publications' echo this
recommendation.

Additionally, it would seem that needing to supplement in order to have
'some wine with dinner' may be a bit extreme, particularly in a culture
where 2.5-3 hrs between feedings is often the norm in the post newborn
period.

Does anyone know what references where used to make these statements? This
is a topic that comes up semi-frequently when talking with expectant and new
mothers.
