Thanks to all of you who replied with information on laryngomalacia. I will
certainly find it useful next time I have a breastfeeding dyad with this
condition, hopefully it will not be a severe at this case. I now feel somewhat
educated. The references and link you all sent are great. With this particular
mother, however, I am not sure how to proceed. The infant has already been
taken off all oral feeds and has a gastric tube. This was done before my post
could get out because I wasn't contacted until two days before the procedure.
Should I discuss feeding technique with the Mom so that she will know what to do
when the time comes for oral feeds to be reintroduced? Or will it no longer be
necessary to use extension positioning and slow feeding by then? Is it my
place to recommend that Mom get a second opinion regarding surgery? Also, to
Rachel Myr, in an old post you mentioned nipple shields as a "saving grace" for
babies with laryngomalacia. Could you tell me more about this?
Also, I wanted to share some encouragement with all of you. I spoke
yesterday at Slippery Rock University to two Health Appraisal and Promotion
classes about breastfeeding. The professor, a former nurse, knew about
breastfeeding from his work as such. He also told me it was required in his curriculum.
While I was on campus, I also talked with two other professors (one was a
former LLL leader) who have breastfeeding in their curriculums, one teaches
international studies and the other is in the psychology department and teaches a
class on mothering. When I went to college at Slippery Rock 20 years ago as a
psychology major no one ever mentioned breastfeeding. I am so happy to see an
awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and that it is being taught to
college students. Regarding the students, the first class had a lot of sleepers,
but the second class was awake and interested and had lots of good questions.
This was my first experience doing this, but I am invited back this summer and
next fall to speak again. Can't wait to go back. Maybe in another 20 years
breastfeeding will be the cultural norm!!!! :)
