There are definitely individual differences. I had a neighbor who
was nursing and her father died very suddenly and unexpectedly. As
she and her also-nursing sister were riding to the funeral, both
noticed increasing circles of moisture on their blouses and
commented, "I thought stress was supposed to inhibit milk flow!"
Incidentally, both had their babies with them, so it wasn't due to
missed feedings.
Both were nursing second babies and in Careoline's recent post about
her response to her father's death her baby was only 6 weeks old. I
suspect that inexperienced moms who may not be fully confident about
nursing yet may be more inhibited by stress, but don't have any
figures to back that suspicion.
