I sure feel for the mom who is nursing through persistent nipple fissures!
I have posted this here before, but maybe my experience might give a
suggestion that could help. This is such a nasty thing to have to deal
with. I am sure that, if this mom was dedicated enough to be willing to put
up with the problem for six months, she probably would like to nurse much
longer, if the problem could be solved.
What I found, in my case of deep nipple fissures, which did not respond to
anything else I tried, (treating for thrush, eczema, bacterial infection,
altering positioning, using only one side for 48 hours, to try to give the
other a chance to heal, etc.) was that it was tied to a deficiency in fat
soluble vitamins (which I believe was made worse by losing my gall bladder).
They started healing within 24 hours after I started taking large doses of
vit. A and E, while nursing on demand. I nursed for about three more years
after that and needed to take the vitamins all the way through. Several
times, I didn't take them for a few days, and the same spots would start to
open up again.
It certainly couldn't hurt to try this, especially if pretty much everything
else has been tried. I hope something will help this mom to be able to have
breastfeeding be a wonderful experience for her and her baby, instead of an
ordeal!
Aloha,
Darillyn
