"We are, in essence, their baby's voice for many moms initially,
until they gain self-confidence"
Oh, how true this is. I keep trying to make that very point but
keep running into the atitude that what the parents want and plan
always takes precedence. To often that is how "family centered
care" is defined! We need to keep reminding everyone that that baby
is now part of the family and his/her needs should carry at least as
much weight as those of the parents. In some ways, baby's needs
should have a higher priority as they are more immediate. Baby has
no concept of time. They only understand "now" and "no". Why do so
many "experts" push the idea that the most mature individuals in the
household have the right to have their needs met first and the least
mature is expected to conform to whatever already exists?!
