Now that the Remedia issue is no longer in the news, the artificial milk
companies are more aggressive than ever. One of the products that they are
really pushing here is the lactose free milk, as the panacea for all crying
in infants. I had a slight altercation with one of the reps who was giving
out samples to pregnant moms, and I opened my usual big mouth, and now the
company is yet again threatening to sue me unless I prove that babies need
lactose to develop properly.
This is one of those things that I just have in my store of facts in my
brain, but I cannot find even one article to support this, except in the LLL
literature, which is not considered high impact enough.
One of our pro-breastfeeding nutritionists said the same thing on TV
recently, and is also getting flack from the company.
Does anyone have a good article backing the importance of lactose in normal
infant development?
I did not come up with anything in the search that I did in my usual search
places.
I did get them to agree with me that the lactose free product was for a very
specific population of infants, and definitely should be given by Rx only or
at least recommendation by physician.
