Dr Mimi shares that it is not a standard in her community to see infants
48-72 hrs post hospital d/c. It is not a standard in my community either
(New Orleans LA, USA). The standard is 2 wks post d/c. What astounds me is
that even vulnerable and poorly feeding babies, babies w/ jaundice, etc are
usually not seen til 2 wks.
What I think would work exceedingly well would be a safety net of nurses
and/or ibclc's to see the babies thru a clinic type setting at the 48-72 hr
point. I beleive I have heard Molly Pessl of Evergreen Hospital in
Washington state USA talk about their very successful nurse run clinic. This
would be a super use of nurses/ibclcs (whichever was available and of course
the ibclc's to see the bf problems), a great place to train other health
care providers including physicians, and a wonderful resource for families.
Of course there has to be a physician or other primary provider on board to
refer problems to. Why even the formula fed babies and thier parents need
some early f/u. We all know that the moms do not absorb much of the teaching
they recieve in hospital those very early days after birth.
