Hi Arly -

I don't know this to be 100% true but in all my searching I've never
been able to find an 'official' statement from a professional
organization about illegal drugs and bf beyond the blanket statement you
have been able to find.

Denise Fisher, however, has an excellent document that discusses some of
the specific health concerns with some specific drugs. Her document is
by no means exhaustive, and she mentioned she needs to update it, but it
might be helpful for your needs. The document can be found at:
http://www.health-e-learning.com/breasted_web_articles/Social%20Drugs%20
and%20Breastfeeding.htm

Ken Ilett, also from Australia, also has a ppt presentation available
online that has some more specific information. His presentation can be
found at:
http://www.pharm.uwa.edu.au/drugs-milk/ALCA-2002/frame.html

Francoise Railhet also has what looks to me to be an old LN post on
naturalchildbirth.org about marijuana and bf, this can be found at:
http://www.naturalchildbirth.org/natural/resources/breastfeeding/breastf
eeding08.htm

I hope these are some help to you.

Subject: position paper: drugs and breastfeeding

Hello all: I am looking for any organization's guidelines or position
paper regarding use of recreational drugs and breastfeeding. AAFP
discusses methadone, and perhaps others do, too. I'm not looking for
"if a woman uses illegal drugs, she should not breastfeed," but rather
something more in the gray area. Has anyone come up with meaningful
guidelines on a individual drug basis and level of activity and recovery
basis and coalesced it into a working whole?

Arly Helm, MS, IBCLC
