This is just my opinion, nothing scientific but, regarding the 46 yo mom, I
don't think she has anything to worry about. There is some concern that
being perimenopausal might affect milk production but, seeing how this mom
is pregnant, I don't think that would be the case. I am very happy for
this mom, having never been able to give birth to a baby, myself. I hope
she has a wonderful time breastfeeding her baby!
I also wanted to comment on an earlier discussion about whether being
perimenopausal is a handicap with induced lactation. We have seen some
adoptive moms who have not produced more than a few ounces of milk a day,
despite heroic effort, who have wondered if being perimenopausal might have
limited their response. I even wonder if that was one reason that I
produced so much less milk for my sixth baby than I had for the three
preceding her. I was just short of 41 when Joanna was born. Although she
was the only one of my children who never had a bottle or pacifier, I really
struggled to produce milk for her. I never felt like I exceeded half of
what I had produced for Joseph, 21 months older, despite the fact that I had
surgery and horrible nipple problems, which resulted in him going for days
at a time having quite a few bottles. Then, when Joanna was eight months
old, on solids and other liquids and not nursing nearly as much, I got a
depo provera injection and my milk supply increased dramatically! I have
wondered if that put my hormones back to being more like they were when I
was younger.
Aloha,
Darillyn
