I agree with Cheryl about informed choices. In hindsight, many parents would
have breastfed had they only known of better immunity. They might still be
the most potent voices to use in a pro-breastfeeding campaign.
32 years ago when I moved here to WA I met a couple whose first daughter
contracted meningitis as an infant and became both deaf and developmentally
impaired. She is now almost 40 years old and has the mind and attention
span of a deaf 18 month old with rudimentary sign language.
When I first met the family, I asked about breastfeeding and the mom
shrugged her shoulders and said "Oh, if I had known about possible
protection by breastfeeding, we would have." Even her Arab pharmacist
husband did not know that was best at the time, or he wished not to call
undue attention due to modesty reasons-I do not know. It was sad when I
first heard this and it is still sad today.

From Cheryl's post
And then there is my neighbor who is angry that she has to go to school 3
times a day to check her daughters blood sugar because she has had diabetes
since she was 3. (Now 8) She wonders why she was never told about the
diabetes risk when she was pregnant or after the birth and she is angry.
There is diabetes in the family on both sides so she definitely would have
listened.
The campaign is not to scare people but to inform them to make a choice
based upon real information.
