I received a call this evening from a woman with the following story.
She has give me permission to post this and get your collective wisdom
and advice.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and had a double
mastectomy and reconstruction. She is now 2 weeks from her due date
with first child. Obviously, she cannot nurse, but would like very much
for her baby to receive breast milk. She has been in contact with the
milk bank in Denver and has received some milk from them. She has also
received a few donations from friends. Her situation has received some
local press and she has had several very generous offers from people
who have heard it. She is reluctant to take milk donations from people
she does not know and is now thinking about how she wants to handle
that.
Banked milk is expensive, she's been turned down by her insurance
company to pay for the milk (no surprise there) and has set up a web
site (feedmybaby.com) and contacted local media to try to solicit
donations for banked milk. Here is her question: Does anyone have ideas
for grants, some kind of funding that could help her pay for banked
milk for her baby.
I remember a story a few years ago about a man whose wife died in
childbirth and he tried to take on the insurance company to cover
banked milk. Does anyone remember that, or know how it resolved?
Any suggestions, thoughts, most appreciated. Please send responses
privately, as well as on the list.
Thanks,
Naomi
