My name is Cindy Strom and I am a nursing student
from North Dakota. Since sore nipples are a common
cause of premature weaning(Brent, Rudy, Redd, &
Roth, 1998), and since breast milk provides short
and long term protection to both mom and
baby(Shaw-Flach, 2002), I wanted to find ways to
prevent this from happening. I did some research on
prevention of nipple soreness in breast feeding
women, I ran across an article in JOGNN(Dodd &
Chalmers, 2003) that compared the use of a hydrogel
dressing to lanolin ointment. The purpose of this
study was to determine the effectiveness of a
hydrogel dressing as compared to lanolin ointment
when used to treat nipple soreness. According to
Dodd and Chalmers(2003), the conclusions of the
research project was that hydrogel dressing are a
safe treatment that provided more effective pain
management and the women used it less often and for
not as long as the women that used the lanolin
ointment. This is the first I have heard of this
and I was wounding if anyone has used a hydrogel
dressing and if you agree with this finding?
Thank you,
Cindy Strom
