Most of us as LC's do what works. I agree it is good to teach a variety of
positions, but some work better than others in the immediate newborn period. A
nine week old infant is vastly different from a newborn. I see so many women
who only want to use the cradle hold no matter how large their breasts or
what the muscle tone, head control of the baby. I want to get babies nursing and
will try almost any position that works. With the cross cradle hold, I
always suggest that once the baby is drinking, she can switch and bring the other
arm around. I also tell moms they will most likely use the cradle hold most of
the time once they get home.
I know I am repeating myself, but our newborns would be different
nursers many times if Moms had fewer interventions in labor. The babies I see are
so sleepy, so lethargic on day one and sometimes day two. I need to help
moms get babies feeding and prepare them for home.
