Just my experience of one:
A few years ago, the owner of a company which had developed a gripe water
(can't remember the name anymore) gave me a sample. I never ended up
giving it to a client, so it sat on a shelf for a while. One day I found
myself suffering from major indigestion/stomach/gas pains. I downed most
of the bottle. It tasted really good, and it really worked. I felt so
much better pretty quickly. In comparing it to simethicone, I thought it
did the job better, as well as tasting better. I'm sure the price would be
a huge difference, though. I had 3 colicky kids of my own, and would
definitely have tried this with them.
