Dear Ann, asking for studies was an excellent idea. If there is no
support to this, then all involved should consider it a very serious
recommendation to deprive this baby of breastmilk and breastfeeding. I
believe that in this case, one would wish to breastfeed, so that one
does not expose the baby to the dangers of formula feeding. I believe
this may be another case of sacrificing breastfeeding for an unknown or
unproven "fear," although I am open to knowing more...if I am uneducated
on this. Bacteria in the mother's blood would not travel into her
breastmilk, now, would it? I was not aware that bacteria could travel
through into milk. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Respectfully, and open to learning, but believing that breastfeeding is
the safest route. Kathleen

Subject: kidney stone surgery
I was wondering if there was any information regarding the following
situation. New Mom, about 2 weeks post partum, will be having a laser
procedure to break up kidney stones. Her urologist told her that she
would have to stop breastfeeding because there could be transient
bacteria in her bloodstream resulting from the procedure. When asked to
cite studies, he could not, saying that he only knows this 'from
experience.'Family would like more information, because Mom does not
want to stop breastfeeding! She is willing to pump and dump if necessary
for a reasonable amount of time if there is literature recommending to
do so. This is all the information I have. Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated! Thank you! You can reply to me directly or post.
Ann from New Paltz, N.Y.
