When I teach about jaundice in my childbirth classes, I explain briefly
what bilirubin is, explain that it is not uncommon in newborns, that it
pumping and dumping for a day is commonly recommended. I also tell
people that pumping and dumping is recommended much more often than it
is actually necessary. If their doc suggests it, I recommend that the
parents seek a second opinion and also that they involve a LC who can
work with the doctor to see what makes most sense in their particular
case.
