Janice,
Trans fatty acids are produced by high temperatures and hydrogenation.
Products are margarines, shortening, shortening oils, and partially hydrogenated
vegetable oils. This is from a book called "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill" by
Udo Erasmus.
According to Erasmus, if mothers consume trans fats then it will show up in
breastmilk. Fats reflect the mother's diet. Thus breastmilk is being used as
a barometer of poor diet practices. The more trans fats you eat, the higher
the levels. Mother's simply need to change their diet and eat less trans fats.
Same could be said about toxins in breastmilk. Mothers who are vegetarians
have less toxins in their milk.
Professor Holub's statements are inflammatory and one has to wonder why so
many researchers/professors have to slam breastfeeding in order to make a point.
But it obviously gets headline news and sure makes the infant formula
industry very happy.
