Dr. Tieman,
I am sure your example of nursing during a parade is one that many
people would have a difficult time duplicating! :)
Is there any way to change the hospital protocols concerning visitors?
Some people are amazed that a hospital implements visiting hours that are
more strict on the postpartum ward than in other wards but when it is explained
to them, they understand. "Mom and baby need a lot of rest, they just did a
lot of hard work."
Not sure if this would impact hospital staff at all, if not or if the
impact is that they have fewer people on the ward causing delays in vitals on
moms or whatever then why would the staff or administration object to limiting
hours? Moms and babies are only in the hospital for 48 hours if all goes
well (or less!). I am sure moms would appreciate a visitor when there is a load
of laundry to fold or plants to water, a sink to empty etc. Maybe a list of
suggestions to visitors could be posted outside the ward (i.e. visit at home
and do a load of laundry).
Just a thought. I know it doesn't help with the night feeds but I
know moms who won't ask visitors to leave and won't nurse in front of them so
they are getting limited feedings during the day too. Maybe tackle the "easiest"
problem first and build on it.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
