I was guessing that the couple might have chosen to describe the decision as
such because they wanted the wife the have the protection of the husband per
their religion, i.e., she could in effect blame it on him.  After all, that is
a central point in this story--- HE wants to take on himself any punishment
meted out to his wife by the courts.

       The husband may be very concerned about his wife and child's nursing
relationship and not want the two of them to be separated by jail time or
lengthy appearances in court.  And it is just an assumption that his handling of
his wife's offense would be severe.  He could handle it by simply saying,
"Honey, we don't want the police so involved in our lives.  How about you pull over
next time the baby needs to nurse?"

These days we bend over backwards to make sure homosexuals are not unfairly
judged-- I would like to suggest that the people on the more conservative end
of the spectrum also deserve respect for their own strongly held beliefs.
