We have a lengthy case report and lots of photos of a woman with a MRSA
related breast infection in our book, The Breastfeeding Atlas. The case was
one Kay Hoover managed, and they are Kay's photos.
The mother continued to provide breast milk from her healthy breast during
most of the infection, although during use of one of the antibiotics
(levofloxacin) the mother was instructed not to nurse or give the baby her
milk. Once the cultures came back with the dx of MRSA, vancomycin therapy
was begun. Three days after beginning IV vancomycin therapy, the mother was
allowed to begin breastfeeding again on the unaffected breast. Milk from
the affected breast had clumps of debris (pus) in it that were the size of
large coins. Milk from this breast was discarded. She continued to maintain
lactation in the affected breast by pumping. At about 4 weeks (once IV
antibiotic therapy was terminated) she began offering the baby the pumped
milk from that breast. About six weeks after the onset of the mastitis, the
mother resumed direct breastfeeding upon the affected breast.
