Rachel,
I have to say that here in the Midwestern US, no mother would be allowed to stay 8 days in the hospital to get BF going. Vaginal deliveries are normally discharged in about 24 hours, breastfeeding or not (they can always give formula, right?). We have a baby on our floor right now that will not breastfeed, does not root or show hunger cues at about 20 hours of age. But the fact that he has a hematoma on his occiput the size of a grapefruit from the vacuum extractor couldn't have anything to do with it. As for staff patience getting thin after 4 days....it seems to get thin at about 12 hours around here. And heaven help the patient if there is no LC on duty. Sigh.
I loved your stories, such as them keeps us going. Thank you so much for sharing.
