Barb:

I am a 16+ year veteran of the Chicago Fire Dept. 4 weeks is a little early
to be returning back to active fire duty, but that is another topic. I
returned back to active fire duty when my 2 children were about 4 months old.

I too was concerned about the toxins at a fire. Unfortunately there are no
studies out there on this. Women in the Fire Service, a Madison, WI
organization had sent out questioners about 10 years ago to women firefighters asking
questions about general health, pregnancy etc. They may have some information
that they have gathered from active women firefighters. I asked this question
to DR Newmann and he said it was unlikely that much would pass into
breastmilk. I told him that I was in full turn out gear with our tank and mask on. Our
equipment protects us and unfortunately doesn't breath very well and we can
become overheated very quickly.

After breastfeeding 2 children during my career and having one of them nurse
until she was almost 6 years old, I assure you my children are healthy, with
no respiratory problems or allergies and allergies run in my family.

Have her email me if she feels the need.
