There's an interesting research report in the latest (July/August 2003) JOGNN
re: "Comparing the use of hydrogel dressings to lanolin ointment with
lactating mothers" by V. Dodd, BA, RN, IBCLC and C. Chalmers, MSN, RN, IBCLC, WHNP.
They randomized 106 mothers that qualified for either the hydrogel (3-inch
MaterniMates) or lanolin (Lansinoh) groups. Instruction was received by all
participants from an IBCLC. The hydrogel group reported significantly less pain and
d/c'd use earlier. The most intriguing finding for me was that 8 in the
lanolin group developed mastitis and there was no mastitis in the hydrogel dressing
group. Although I had a couple of questions about participant inclusion in the
study, e.g. I got the impression any willing mother who met certain
demographic criteria could be included vs. those with c/o nipple soreness or tissue
damage, the findings are still very interesting.

This issue includes a couple of other interesting reports that could
definitely affect LC work, although not (much info) directly related to BF, per se:
"Transition to motherhood" and "Postpartum women's perceptions of the hospital
environment." There's also an article re: "Noise and the premature infant:
Physiological effects and practice implications." Good issue...

Karen
