Alice, 
The Breastfeeding Answer Book, 3rd edition, p.182&183 state normal hemoglobin to be 10.2 to 15 gm/dL range.  It also discusses the fact that iron in mother's milk has a higher degree of bio-availablilty.  There are citations included.

On a personal note, my twins who were 7 weeks early, had very low iron as infants.  I worked with the peds to supplement with iron only supplementation for three months (they had drastic and immediate improvement in energy levels).  I then negociated with the peds to stop and re-test to ensure that iron levels remained in normal limits.  Negociation with the ped might be appropriate in this instance.  This hemoglobin level seems borderline normal and just encouraging high iron foods in diet may be sufficient to seem improvement.  Sounds as is this ped. is disturbed by one-year old who is still breastmilk dependant.

  I've been unable to reach the archives  today.  A mother of a one year old
  was told by the pediatrician to wean (and start some new vitamins with fluoride
  ????)  because hemoglobin is 10.9.  The child is not eating a lot of solids.
  Mother is employed full-time and has no intention of cutting down
  breastfeeding or weaning.
  What suggestions would you have for the mother and what references would be
  good to give to the pediatrician?  Ped is fairly new so would be open to
  information.  TIA
