Perhaps the querry on cervical cancer is a mis-remembering of another kind
of "female" cancer that breastfeeding may offer some protection against. I
have several studies in my files on an apparant reduction in risk of ovarian
cancer in women who have breastfed.

A Schneider:  Risk Factor for Ovarian Cancer (letter), New Engl J Med 1987;
317(8):508-9.

"data from the Cancer and Steroid Hormone Study (March 12 issue) indicate a
negative association between epithelial ovarian cancer and breastfeeidng.
In fact, the negative association persists after control for the effects of
parity and the use of oral contraceptives."

A Japanese study noted "a significant negative association between
anovulatory periods and ovarian cancer risk (p<0.01)" The ref. for this
study:

M Mori et al: Reproductive, Genetic, and Dietary Risk Factors for Ovarian
Cancer, Am J Epidemiol 1988; 128(4):771-776.

A Whittemore: Characteristics relating to ovarian cancer risk:
implications for prevention and detection, Gynecol Oncol 1994; 55:S15.

I think there was also a WHO collaborative study on this subject in the
early 90's and it's prob. available on the WHO website.

It's been a while since I did a specific search on this subject.
