Recently, I was interviewed for a radio program on the subject of adoptive
breastfeeding (can be downloaded at
http://www.letstalkadoption.com/Archive/karleen.html I'd be interested in
feedback). During the course of the interview I was asked what mothers might
do to improve attachment if they were not breastfeeding. I suggested the
usual stuff, keeping child close, being responsive, cosleeping, slinging etc
and that mothers might need support in order to practice this non-mainstream
mothering style. I also said that perhaps it is worth mothers contacting LLL
and that they might obtain support there even if they are not breastfeeding.
I know that ABA welcomes non-breastfeeding mothers hwever, I am not certain
that LLL does also. Can someone clarify this for me?
There are many adopted children with nasty histories who pretty much force
their mothers into attachment style parenting. They often cop a lot of flak
from those who don't understand their child's challenges or why they doing
strange things like cosleeping, not leaving their child in care etc. Many
would really benefit from mother to mother support if they were able to
access it.
