I worked a few hours yesterday to see several of my currently pregnant
patients and had a pregnant mom ask me about exclusive pumping. She is
pregnant for the 3rd time after 2 previous pregnancy losses, so this will be
her first baby. She mentioned this at the end of the visit, and I didn't
have time to go into detail with her, but as she is just 17 weeks, have some
time yet for dialogue. She mentioned being uncomfortable with the idea of
breastfeeding, but wants to pump exclusively and feed her milk to the baby.
My question is this: I certainly don't want to discourage her from
providing her milk to her baby. However, I'd like to explore with her why
she feels uncomfortable with breastfeeding and encourage her to consider
breastfeeding baby directly if possible. Anyone have any good suggestions
for ways to encourage her, while leaving the possiblity of exclusive pumping
open?
