Email is a wonderful medium for communication. It allows us to be in
touch with people we couldn't have dreamed of "meeting" only a few
years ago. It allows us to learn things that we could not have learned.
But it also has its down sides. Because it is so easy to use, we dash
off notes without really thinking about their importance or their
impact. Spell checkers can correct our typos for us, soon grammar
checker will be able to do the same for our syntax, but the tone and
contents of our emails and posts are still our responsibility.
May I suggest that we each get in the habit of reading over our posts
at least once before pushing the send button and, if the note is an
emotional one for the sender, wait a day before sending it? I have done
that on several occasions, and often the next day, my concern has been
raised by someone else and/or the note doesn't seem so important as it
did the day before.
With thanks to our listmothers and to all who take the time and energy
to share their expertise and insights with us.
