Fortunately, homebirth mothers and babies have seemed well cared for in this
vicinity. I often see homebirth mothers and babies in their homes for
consults in my private practice. Prior to seeing them, indeed, as a criteria
for seeing them - I ask if they have physicians chosen for each of them. I
explain that I will be sending an assessment to one or the other, or both.
On my intake form mother fills in those names and signs this form which, in
part, specifies that by doing so she gives her permission for me to share
information with these physicians. I believe her having filled out this form
and signing it covers me if she should later decide not to see these
physicians if I should believe it necessary and recommend doing so.
Over the years I have refused to do consults for only two mothers who told
me on the phone that they would not see physicians and would not want me to
send an assessments to one.
I have wondered if I may send assessments to CNMs who have delivered
mothers in hospital when they have been the mother's only contact from a
physicians office? How about sending copies of assessments to the lay
midwives who have delivered a mother at home along with the one to the
physician?
If there is anything I should alter or something else I should know I
would appreciate being informed.
