I encourage mothers both in my support groups and in
weaning consults to take nursing photos for the family
album and to talk about nursing with their children
and friends in order to preserve nursing memories.
Nursing memories are an extraordinary way to encourage
a healthy appreciation for the female body and for the
mother-child relationship. Perhaps part of the
Western problem is our concern with "hiding"
breastfeeding.
I know many children who nursed between 5 and 11 years
who actively and happily remember nursing and refer to
it nonchalantly off and on.
What an impact these children will make all their
lives on cultural views of the breast and on
understanding mother-child attachment.
