In 1991 the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
requested clinical studies for the Healthy People 2000 Project. The statement,
"Although it is commonly stated that human milk is the opitmal food for newborn
humans, it might be possible to develop artificial formulae which enhance infant
development and health even more than does human milk."

In reviewing that quote, I thought I'd look at Healthy People 2010 and was
interested to see what was considered to be the 10 major health indicators for
the nation and the focus areas. Infant feeding was not a top ten health
indicator--although immunization was on that list. In my opinion the initiation and
duration of breastfeeding should be one of the leading health indicators for
a nation, particularly since the concerns seem to be the levels of asthma,
obesity, and diabetes in this country.

What I did see at this site was rather interesting. Healthy People 2010 has
partners from all sectors. Under businesses, there are the Trade Associations
such as the American Meat Institute, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, the Sugar
Association, etc. The association that interested me the most was the National
Food Processors Association(NFPA) This association is the "voice of the $500
billion food processing industry on scientific and public policy issues
involving food safety, nutrition, technical and regulatory matters and consumer
affairs.

For example: key officers of the NFPA are Paul Wood, chairman--senior VP of
Uniliver and some of the members are.....ya guessed it.....Martin G. Holford,
Nestle, USA (on the executive committee of the NFPA), Michael Milone--Heinz,
and Frank Palentoui, Novartis (Gerber).....

Hm..........now let me see, just how are we going to get to the goal of 75%
initiation and 50% duration rates of breastfeeding in the USA? With a little
help from our friends?
