Hi, Jay:  Amen to the "disturbing" idea that babies are in the nursery
instead of out with their mothers!  I am the Clinical Lead for Lactation
Services in a Level 2 community hospital that serves a upper-middle to
upper class clientele.  Our pediatric groups INSIST that all the babies are
to be brought to the nursery every morning for exams.  Many of these babiea
are away from their mothers 4-5 hours while the nursing staff waits for the
peds to show up whenever.  I receive daily complaints from the mothers.
But, God forbid, the ped do the exam in the mother's room in front of the
parents.  They might actually - GASP - be asked questions! Their
rationale?  They don't have time in the AM - they need to get to the
office!.  But they do go around to the rooms to talk with the parents after
doing the exam and before going to the office.  Would it not be less time-
consuming and more time-efficient to do both simultaneously?  Hmmm - what a
concept!
P.S.  By the way, we also do not routinely do rooming-in, either. After
all, mothers need their sleep at night!  Sigh...
