Please everyone, fax/FedEx/mail/and email (as a backup only) your
letters this weekend, even if all you say is: "Don't gut the National
Breastfeeding Awareness Campaign. Keep it intact." Shorter is better,
anyway. Follow-up with phone calls Monday if you can. If the US
government falls down on this one, it may be a very long time before we
get this far again.
I imagine, without knowing for certain, that letters from outside the
US would also have some impact, since they would show that the eye of
the world is on this issue. And for good or ill (historically for ill,
in the case of breastfeeding), US culture and US business impact
breastfeeding rates in other countries. My country bears a great
share of the responsibility for the global decline of normal infant
feeding. I, for one, would like to mitigate or remove this negative
effect. I can even hope we will reverse it, if the Campaign works.
For me it comes down to whether the US government chooses to represent
the interests of the mega-corporations over the interests of its
people. But that's by the by; the main thing is to convince the US
government to stand fast against the pressures of this particular big
industry.
