Recently I asserted to an MD that Depo-Provera & other
progestin-containing contraceptives given immediately postpartum could
inhibit the milk supply. When he asked for refs I found that in both the
new BAB and Hale's Clinical Therapy 2nd edition it says the risk is
theoretical and has in fact not been proven in the studies that have been
done. Since these are both so recent I am guessing there aren't any
references available that they don't cover, but am I wrong? Or does anyone
have anecdotal information or a published case study?
On thinking this over, it does actually seem as if there must be a loophole
of some kind, since if Depo-Provera affected the milk supply as
definitively as retained placental fragments, there would presumably be no
question about it by now (we do after all know what retained placenta
does). It's the things that affect some people some of the time that
are tough to pin down. Is this one of them?

The doctor I spoke with said that the D-P package insert did not say
anything about this possibility but other things I've been reading in my
recent hunt for info say that the package insert does, or did, say to wait
6 weeks. Can anyone who actually has this material handy tell me what the
insert says?

Thanks!
Elise
